2023 Completed Events

Rewire Community completed 10 years of service: A Small Celebration

Rewire Community had the honor and joy of celebrating our 10 years of work in community with…well, the community :). While the actual 10 year anniversary was on 3rd December, 2022, we had a small gathering early 2023. Joined by friends, family, allies, advocates, activists, supporters, volunteers…we closed out a decade and welcomed whatever the future holds now. Together.

Through the hugs, smiles, tears and love, all that we hold close, we thank each of you for being part of our journey! Check out this short video where we tried to capture moments of the evening. It was one big beating heart #creatingwavesofchange.

Community Vigil- In Honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

On October 26, Rewire Community stood in solidarity with our community and sister organizations, Narika, Tri-Valley Haven and PFLAG SRV, for our annual community vigil to honor National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

We came together to create a space where we can break the silence around interpersonal violence, to honor those standing with us here and the many not with us anymore. To remove the stigma and re-traumatization a survivor goes through in the silence. With war and terror and pain all around us and lives that are impacted and lost to senseless acts of violence – domestic violence, gun violence, international conflict – we speak to condemn any and all violence! We promise to practice non-violence!

Thank you to all who joined us! Thank you for speaking up, for showing up. It matters. You matter!

Move-a-Thon

In October, Rewire Community welcomed all to a virtual fundraiser- our very first Move-A-Thon! We invited all to swim, dance, run, walk, bike…whatever movement one chose, to come together to raise awareness and funds for families impacted by domestic violence and assault. San Ramon Culture in the Community

Rewire Community had the wonderful opportunity on October 15 to take our dance of empowerment to the City of San Ramon’s annual Culture in the Community. Thank you to all who showed up to support us and so many other artists. It was a colorful day celebrating people.

Rewire brought a dance of empowerment -- the dance had two parts, the message of standing up for yourself, honoring yourself. As always, standing for love and courage.

Back-to-School drive

In Aug, we wrapped up our 2023 back-to-school drive and delivered 48 backpacks to the Asian Women's Shelter! With deep gratitude we share that we met our goal of raising $706 for the 48 backpacks within a few hours of starting the drive!!!

As always, this could not have been done without the immediate support we received from the community when we put the request out last week. Thank you all for enabling Rewire Community to continue our work!

The photos are of the backpacks, school supplies and tiny hands that helped us assemble them— for confidentiality and safety reasons, no other pics of the children receiving the bags will be shared.

Rewire Community at San Ramon PRIDE

“the moon does not have to ask, before it changes, the moon has never learnt to apologise, when it shines greater than the sun.” - by Anureet Watta, queer youth poet in India, recited by Shailaja Dixit today at the San Ramon PRIDE celebration!

An evening of words, poetry, music, movement, breathing and books. A reminder of the love that exists around us, and the hope and power it lends to the fight for justice. A continued time of solidarity as we stand against hateful acts hurting the LGBTQ++ community. A time of peace & anger, pain & joy, silence & hugs.

Rewire Community was represented by our youth, Sanaa (10 yr) and Reyah (6 yr), who asked for a world where people can love and live as they want, to stop hurting people because they choose to be a certain way and create safe spaces for everyone.

Thank you PFLAG SRV, San Ramon Valley Diversity Coalition and City of San Ramon for bringing us all together to speak as one voice! May the colors always shine bright.

Rewire Community at Chitresh Das Institute's annual performance, Aranya Katha

Of music and movement, colors and joy, stories and activism…it was an evening of being part of Chitresh Das Institute’s annual performance. Rewire Community had the honor to be the inaugural organization to be spotlighted at the event… an opportunity to connect with the youth and speak with the adults, doing interactive activities to get us all thinking about equity and equality, of justice and empowerment. Of healthy relations.

We thank Chitresh Das Institute for the invite, and are so proud to be a small part of the evening!

Shout out to our volunteer, Archana Patil, for the beautiful tree she made for our activity. We cut out paper leaves where people wrote what equality means to them, and created a vision together.

Art in Nature

“Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. But first— REFUSE!” We all screamed in unison!

Our Art in Nature session was an afternoon with the youth in our community, ages 10-18 years, talking about climate justice and how each person is a change agent! Age never a bar.

Walking through the creek, grass, mud, streets, picking up stuff and figuring how to create something new with them, learning about ‘upcycling’. Wind chimes with styrofoam, beads, rocks from the walk, Cards with colors, leaves, twigs, their interpretation of environment and nature; talking about how we change our behaviors.

At the end, we hope a seed was laid…a reminder that those of us who hold the power of hope, have the responsibility to care and do.

Here’s to being Changemakers!

Celebrating women who tell our stories

Rewire Community took this Women History Month theme forward to honor and recognize those who have created, changed, lived and chronicled stories for us all!  Through March 2023, we shared some of these stories -- of women who have inspired and trailblazed, activists and advocates, changemakers and peace seekers, rebels and community organizers, artists and scientists, great-grandparents and great-friends, from our past and our present!  Check out our facebook page to see these stories: www.facebook.com/rewirecommunity

Women have been instrumental in passing on our heritage and communicating the lessons of those who came before us. Women’s stories, and the larger human story, continue to expand our understanding and strengthen our connections with each other. So let us build on these...together!

Making His-story, Their-Story too!

#EmbraceEquity video series for Women History Month

Through the month of March, Rewire Community embarked on a journey  of speaking to 'equity' and what it means to embrace it. Megha Sharma Narang, co-ED of Rewire Community, and a social emotional well-being counselor for elementary kids, shared some of her own learnings.

In the three-part video series, we talked about --

We hope this has helped build conversations and action to create equitable spaces for all!

For IWD 2023, once again Rewire Community invited all to join us in celebrating in solidarity, this year asking all to give equity a huge embrace!

Gender equity is core to gender justice, what our team stands for, as part of our value, mission and action. Equitable spaces create inclusivity. Inclusive spaces create equity.

Throughout the day, we posted photos sent in by our family, friends, allies, community members, that we posted on our Rewire Community facebook page.

International Women's Day with SAVE (Safe Alternatives for Violent Environments)

Big thanks to SAVE for a beautiful gathering in celebration of International Women’s Day and for inviting Rewire Community to be part of the movement.

It was wonderful to see the local organizations present there, learn of all the work they do and the resources and support they offer to all, to hear the many stories of scars and hope, inspiring us, listen to the powerful poetry from our youth, their experience their voice, watch the warm spaces created for the mess and chaos of the younger kids, and a community that came together to honor it all.

Standing next to Narika and SAVE advocates as we all danced together was a powerful moment of solidarity that we are proud to be part of!

A shout out to all the other organizations present there for all they do to create healthy communities! Thank you!

Here’s to #EmbracingEquity…together.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Open Mic

Rewire Community had the wonderful opportunity and honor to join the open mic at the San Ramon City Hall, in honor of MLK Day. We are grateful for the safe space that was created for us and all gathered there, to share our thoughts and action, in any expression we chose. Rewire Community did so through movement to a song called ‘Tod do’ ('break them, the biases and barriers holding you back'), powerful words written by one of our co-founders, Shailaja. It was also moving to hear from community members about their stories and journeys, from leaders and elected officials about the work that is being done for social reform, and how all come together to acknowledge much is yet to be done. One of our favorite parts was hearing from our youth! So glad they took the mic. May their voices soar!

And we march on.
