Dance to empower

Our heartfelt thanks to all who came together as we embarked on the journey of dance to empower. This year we created an experience that honors our unique journey of self empowerment and self- expression.  Focusing on five elements of dance – body, energy, time, space, action – we aimed to create a community and a safe space to explore movement and self-care through the weeks.

Spreading freedom (1).jpg

Spreading Freedom

Big thanks to Annie Lagunas for leading two amazing days of crafts and activism.

This was a special purple themed earring making session with Annie-- an advocate, survivor, activist, artist. Every October she makes purple earrings to commemorate the National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. And honor her own journey to freedom. This year the purple earrings made are being donated to support Annie’s annual October sale. 100% of all proceeds will benefit SAVE, a non-profit in Fremont that serves survivors of domestic violence

Annie also shared with our youth the red flags that can indicate an unhealthy relationship. These may include instances when a partner/date:

- controls your time; controls your attire; controls your movements; controls your friendships; disrespects you verbally; violates your privacy; wants access to your phone or digital accounts

Seema Rekha

With gratitude and self-compassion, we ended our journey with Seema Rekha today (Aug 13)- an 8-week skill building group designed to help us create healthy boundaries.

This workshop was tailored to exploring, understanding and navigating the needs of collective cultures, such as South Asian cultures, with each week having a specific set intention and topic, building on the previous session.

Thanks to all the women who joined in- for the laughter, sharing, learnings and connections. And our heartfelt shoutout to Sangita Biswas for facilitating this unique session.

We hope to bring it back soon for youth and teens! Stay tuned!

Courageous Conversations About Race

Rewire Community invited all for a community discussion: Courageous Conversations About Race. Facilitated by Angela Valdez and Mimi Quan. Open to all adults and youth 14+.

The goal of the gathering was to offer space for community members to listen and learn from each others’ rich and diverse racial perspectives and experiences. We strive to expand our racial consciousness and unpack concepts of racism and privilege. We believe that by co-creating and valuing such a space, we can all help build a more empathetic environment for our community to thrive in.

The community facilitators introduced the agreements and tools offered by Glen Singleton's book: Courageous Conversations About Race.

PRIDE celebration

Rewire Community welcomed all for a virtual community gathering in honor of PRIDE month. We had over 30 attendees engage online, as our inspiring GSA youth leaders and community advocates spoke about the importance of being inclusive, the impact of language and the power of being an ally. We are grateful to all the youth and their mentors who took the time to share their stories and helped create a safe space for an integrated dialogue. We hope to continue the work forward with our thoughts and actions.

Earth Week 2020 flyer.jpg

Earth Week 2020 (#RewireCommunityEarthWeek)

These unprecedented times have asked each of us to find new ways to live, work and engage with ourselves, our neighbors, our community and our environment. In an effort to stay connected in a time of needed physical separation, and keeping the climate justice movement alive, Rewire Community invited all for a virtual Earth Week celebration! Check out what our plans were. The week started with #HeartsInTheWindow and closed with a virtual Upcycling Hour.

We hope the week brought moments of collaboration, inspiration, compassion and empathy into your spaces. We also hope we continue taking these actions forward beyond the week. The fires still burn, the glaciers are still disappearing, super hurricanes will still come--and those most vulnerable will, once again, be hit the hardest. So, let this also means we will continue to be climate justice advocates beyond today-- ever stronger in that focus. #InThisTogether.

Boba Talks.jpg

boba talks

Rewire Community was joined by youth Grade 7 and up, for a free boba and an interactive conversation on how to have healthy friendships and relationships with our friends, family and loved ones. What is a healthy relationship? What are the warning signs? How do we seek help or be a good ally? Engaging, informative conversations. As we grow up and step out into this world, it is important we learn tools to keep ourselves safe yet also feel connected and loved by people around us.
